Dr. Lee Jai-Yonug’s Cartificate of Passing the Bar Exam for the Medical Doctor

This artical aims at presenting Dr. Lee Jai-Young’s cerificate of passing the bar exam for Medical doctor’s license. This certificate was donated by his son, Dr. Lee Kyu-Dong, to the Dong-Eun Medical Museum last year. After graduation from
Severance Union Medical College Dr. Lee Jai-Young Passed the bar exam in 1915 which had been held since 1914.
The first graduates of Severance Hospital Medical College in 1908 took license of running the clinic without passing the bar exam. But the situation changed rapidly as the Medical Law of 1913 and the medical regulaton of 1914 were announced.
According to these rules, the applicants who wanted to be physicians had to study in an authorized institution for more than 4 years and pass the bar exam. We think that the establishment of the bar exam in 1910s is one of the most important event in establishing modern health care system in Korea.
